The collection started when 174 work have been purchased from European sellers in 1871. Almost two-thirds of those work have been deaccessioned, however high quality work by Jordaens, Van Dyck, Poussin, the Tiepolos, Guardi, and some other artists stay within the collection. Major gifts from Henry Gurdon Marquand in 1889, 1890 and 1891 gave the Met a much more solid basis. Additionally, his example helped to create a taste for accumulating Old Master work. In 1913, the Benjamin Altman bequest had enough vary and depth to place the Met’s collection of work on the map. The Robert Lehman Collection, which came to the museum in 1975, included many significant paintings, and is especially strong in early Renaissance material.
A forty five,000-square-foot trendy addition generally known as the “New Wing”, designed by architects Skidmore, Owings and Merrill to house the overwhelming majority of the exhibition area, was opened to the general public in 1991. Robinson, Mills & Williams oversaw the inside design of the new addition. By 1997, the museum had acquired a group of approximately one thousand pieces of up to date art, mostly works on paper. An 8.5 ft (2.6 m) tall bronze statue of the Rocky Balboa character was commissioned in 1980 and placed at the top of the stairs browse around here in 1982 for the filming of Rocky III. After filming was full, Stallone donated the statue to town of Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Art Commission finally decided to relocate the statue to the now-defunct Spectrum sports area due to controversy over its prominent placement at the top of the museum’s entrance stairs and questions on its creative benefit. The statue was positioned briefly on prime of the stairs again for the 1990 movie Rocky V after which returned to the Spectrum.
